Sadhana simply means ‘morning practice’. It does not matter exactly what that practice is, as long as you are making a personal commitment to yourself to become more conscious and learn to relate to the infinity within you.
Now there are many elements that may enhance ones experience of Sadhana. Each culture/religion has their own symbols or practices that they prescribe to. For example, many people wake before dawn during the “ambrosial hours” (the two and a half hours just before sunrise), when the sun is at a sixty-degree angle to the earth. They believe that the energy you put into your sadhana at this time will give you maximum results, as the world is quieter. It’s easier to meditate and concentrate before the hustle and bustle of the day begins. Meditation is another element of sadhana that many cultures/religions subscribe to. When we learn to let go of our egoic thinking mind and enter into stillness, we have the potential to tap into consciousness, our higher selves. Chanting is another element that can be added to your personal sadhana. In chanting, not only does one create a sound frequency or vibration, but in the act, you are also stimulating certain meridian points in the body which enhance your nervous system functions and perhaps awaken the outer bodies as well. Many cultures/religions practice yoga or exercise in their sadhana. Maintaining a healthy physical body can only enhance all the faculties of our beings. The healthier we are the more open and available we become to others and ourselves.
Develop a personal sadhana that is meaningful to you, This is what counts. It could be as simple as spending five minutes a day on conscious breathing; going for a walk in nature; lighting a candle and saying what you are grateful for; or it could be a two-three hour practice that a particular teacher has suggested. It could even be crowing like a rooster if that has meaning to you. Try many things and notice what feels good. Then you are on the right track. If Sadhana has the potential to help you develop into an even brighter, more conscious being, then why not give it a try? Don’t you think you deserve it?
