Directions
Looking out over the landscape of this bountifull country one can seldom see roads due to the flora and non-flat terrain. The map we have is so simplistic and shows little more than the major cities and highways. This requires then asking for direction. I have come to be somewhat skeptical of the responce primarily due to the fact that one recieves multiple answers to the same question! Often it is a simple wave of the hand in an S manuever starting from the bottom in the general direction that we already knew to go. Typically it will be sending us to the highway as if we were in a car. We have gotten good at explaining that we prefer trails or dirt roads because it is better for the horses. The light comes on and we get what we want. However, a majority of time I get the feeling that they do not know or have never been to the place we ask direction too. The answer is what they think or the S wave. Long story short we often find ourselves lost in terms of the most direct and fastest route. The only phrase that concerns me is (no passer) and we have had that "incident". When in doubt Glenn gets out his GPS tracking device and i my compass and we just go in the the direction on whatever road or trail goes that way --and there are many. This has led us to some amazing places and scenes. Yesterday we happened upon a man carrying a huge load of wood from the forrest using the strap over the forehead method. this is not an unusual sight but behind him was his small son with his own forehead strap and small load of wood happily mimicking his father. These are things that burn into my memory. The little valleys with clear running water (not common) and full of deep green grass and conifer trees. I call them horse heavens. All my life I have wondered what is beyond the next hill and actually went to see but not without having to know with planning what to expect. We can be thankful for those that have gone before for that. I think planning is a good thing but it is also a fear of not being comfortable. I mean how did Columbus plan for the complete unkown? lucky for us most is known. In a very remote way just going in the general direction is a tiny glimpse of that. All who wander are not lost.rl
