Calendar

When one thinks of the Maya one of the first things that comes to mind is their famous calendar.  Apparently it is truly a marvel of observation of the heavenly bodies and their movements and a reliable predictor of the seasons and the important things to an agricultural people like the Maya like when the rains will come and when to harvest.  To a primitive people it certainly was a daunting task to amass such information and it was also the task or maybe the privilege of a few to know its meanings.   As time progressed it was not long before something so powerful as this would be exploited.  Those that could understand and therefore predict events and vital dates could then perform ceremony and and acts that would indicate that they somehow were empowered  to make things happen.  They of course would be held in high esteem and elevated to a ruling class of wealth and power.   Some of these acts and ceremonies included things like psychedelic enema's,  scrotum piercing and ritual sacrifice.   It worked well for these in the know and no harm done.  Until, something horrible happened.   Some event not in the amazing calendars sphere.  It might have been anything,  a comet,  volcanoes, earthquakes,  the wobble on the earths axis but the climate changed.  The rains did not come and no amount of crowing on the part of the calendar charlatans brought the sun to come up if you will.  People began to die, and in the end out of desperation they probably sacrificed the Calendar keepers but to no avail.   Those that remained dispersed to find sustenance and the earth reclaimed the mighty works of men.  Things eventually returned to "normal"  and men of the future discover the amazing calendar etched in stone.   Predictions are made and well,  maybe we will rekindle the scrotum piercing as well, OUCH.
